The Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) Partnership provides health and care services to around 934,000 people.

As BSW prepared to transition from a Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) to an Integrated Care System (ICS), they needed a digital transformation partner to support their evolution. What began as a single website project has grown into a long-term partnership with Medico Digital, encompassing multiple innovative solutions to support healthcare delivery across the region.

The Challenge

Tackling training barriers and talent retention

BSW faced several interconnected challenges as they evolved.Initially, they needed to create a new ICS website that would engage stakeholders and inform the public about their work. However, they also struggled with communicating education and training opportunities to employees across the ICS, with hospitals across the trust working in silos when it came to running training courses.

As the partnership developed, new challenges emerged. They needed a way to retain valuable healthcare talent within their network, as candidates who were unsuccessful for specific roles but showed great potential were being lost. Additionally, when the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism became a requirement, BSW needed to ensure all 45,000 staff members could access and complete this crucial training.

The solution:

Medico Digital worked with BSW to deliver a series of integrated digital solutions:

  1. A flexible multi-site platform for BSW’s evolving needs
    We developed a new WordPress website for the BSW Partnership, designed to engage stakeholders and inform the public about their work. This evolved into a platform that could host multiple microsites for different departments and initiatives, providing a cohesive digital presence while allowing individual teams autonomy over their content.
  2. Streamlined training for 45,000 staff
    We developed a centralised training and education platform, that enables staff across the BSW network to easily discover and book learning opportunities. The platform offers:
    • Comprehensive course listing and booking tools
    • Line manager approval workflows
    • Automated notifications to keep users informed and up-to-date
    • A resource library for on-demand learning materials
    • Full integration with existing systems

    This platform became particularly valuable when the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training was introduced. The existing infrastructure allowed BSW to efficiently manage training for all 45,000 staff members, supported by features including:
    • Mass user creation for rapid onboarding
    • Bulk scheduling for training events
    • Automated communications to streamline updates
    • Training tracking and reporting
  3. Talent pool to retain top healthcare professionals
    Building on the success of these initiatives, we developed a dedicated talent pool website to improve talent retention across the network. This platform provides:
    • Multiple entry points for talent, including self-registration, manager referrals and HR submissions
    • Comprehensive candidate profile management to streamline recruitment
    • Advanced search capabilities for employers, helping employers identify the best fit for roles
    • Automated engagement notifications to keep talent informed and connected
    • GDPR-compliant data handling
